This just in – an interesting article in the NYTimes today about the opening of an upscale restaurant in Beijing called “Capital M”. With the popular and well-known “M on the Bund” in Shanghai and “M on the Fringe” in the trendy Lan Kwai Fong bar district of Hong Kong, this marks the third of Michelle Garnaut’s fine dining ventures in China.
The restaurant’s main selling point, other than offering (presumably) good food at an impressive price point (impressive for the businessmen trying to impress their clients that is), is the spectacular view. Dining on the terrace at Capital M affords diners an excellent view of Tiananmen Square. Although the sensitive location has caused a few restaurant blues, the view of Tiananmen Square and in the distance, the Forbidden City, make it all worth it.
The article ponders whether Beijing has finally made it as a world-class city on the dining scene – in the reporter’s words, “the opening of Capital M suggests that Beijing’s dining scene is reaching an international level of sophistication”. I somewhat doubt that – but of course Chris and I are biased since we lived in Shanghai. We visited Beijing a couple years before the Olympics, and honestly, it wasn’t a world-class city, but it has changed a lot in the past few years, so who knows?
